The 16 Port Hub and Some Recommendations
Most computers only come with 2, 3 or 4 USB ports (mine has 3) and I’m pretty sure you can relate to me when I say that I sometimes go crazy trying to figure out where I’m supposed to plug things into. I have a lot (when I say a lot, I literally mean a lot!) of USB devices and I’m so thrilled when I found out about the 16 port hub. The one I have costs $160 but I can say that it is worth every penny. You do the Math, every USB port costs $10 so I wouldn’t complain about the price anymore. You’ll end up saving more money than buying cheaply made individual USB hubs.
Your 16 port hub should give you 22.5 Watts of power, this is perfect for charging iPods, iPads, camcorders, batteries and other rechargeable electronics. The hub generates its power through a power cord that you plug into the wall. There aren’t a lot of USB ports that are self-powered and do not require your computer to be turned on. I recommend the one from ThinkGeek.
What I appreciate most about the product is it allows you to plug in two computers which will provide you with the ability to share the sources coming from the devices. One thing I need to tell you though, you cannot use the hub with both computers simultaneously. This could have been a really nice feature but you’ll never know, the makers are probably already working on it to provide us with 16 port hubs that are more functional and economical. You can just push the button on the 16 port USB hub to switch back and forth between computers.
Now you can plug in your phone, flash drive, digital camera, SnowBot, external Hard Drive, plasma ball, LED beverage cooler without having to decide which one needs to be plugged in first. You’ve got 16 so… sure you can plug them all in! It comes with a built-in power supply so you won’t have to worry about purchasing another AC adapter. The 16 port hub from ThinkGeek is neither annoyingly bulky nor small. The size is about right as it fits perfectly almost anywhere. It measures 116 x 67 x 63mm (approximately) and it only weighs about 0.8 lbs. You can easily take this baby with you when you travel, no problem!
Another product that I am fairly interested with is the Netgear FS116 16 Port Ethernet Hub. I like it because it requires no software configuration, the installation is so easy that you’ll get done in minutes. Your LAN will be provided with high speed, 10/100 Mbps auto-sensing connectivity for as many as 16 users. Now that’s amazing! Each switch is encased in a sturdy metal to give you years of dependable use. It weighs about 2 lbs and it measures 11.2 in x 4.1 in x 1.1 inches. Although it doesn’t come with fans, it only runs warm to the touch so it’s all good. You can purchase it for as low as $60 and it comes with Netgear Lifetime Warranty. Now that’s the deal I’m talking about! It’s cheap and it works well. The Linksys 16 Port Hub is about the same price and it works equally well. This is indeed a quick and easy way to enhance your network’s performance while transferring to the power of fast Ethernet.
